Another Saturday, another incredible morning on the water.
This week's Whales of the Bay cruise delivered an unforgettable surprise with sightings of four humpback whales just outside the Golden Gate.
We began the morning at what Captain Mike calls "cetacean station," where we've been spotting gray whales over the past month. While the gray whales didn't make an appearance this time, Captain Mike decided it was the perfect day to head toward Mile Rock, where humpback whales had been reported over the last few days.
With calm seas and great conditions, we made our way out of the bay for the first time this season. Along the journey, harbor porpoises rode alongside the boat, harbor seals popped up to say hello, and even a California sea lion joined in the fun. For many guests, simply cruising beyond the Golden Gate was an adventure in itself.
It didn't take long before we found what we were looking for. A mother humpback and her calf greeted us near Mile Rock, treating everyone on board to a series of spouts and even a few spectacular breaches. We spent about 15 minutes watching the pair before spotting two more humpbacks in the distance.
For a few magical moments, there were humpback whales in nearly every direction around the boat. It was one of those mornings that reminds us just how incredible the waters off San Francisco can be.
Every whale watching trip is different, and that's part of the excitement. We can't wait to see what next Saturday has in store.
