FAQ's
Are whale sightings guaranteed?
Whale sightings are never guaranteed. These are wild animals in their natural habitat, and that's exactly what makes encountering them so magical. However, San Francisco Bay and the area just outside the Golden Gate are among the richest whale-watching regions in the world. Our crew and naturalist guides know these waters intimately, and sighting rates are consistently high in season. Rain or shine, fog or sun, the Bay always has something extraordinary to offer. If you don't see whales, we invite you to come back for another ride on any of our regularly scheduled cruises.
Will the Bay be rough? What about seasickness?
Just outside the Golden Gate, conditions can be choppier than inside the Bay. This is part of the authentic experience. Guests who are sensitive to motion are advised to take over-the-counter seasickness medication (such as Dramamine or Bonine) before boarding, eat a light meal, and choose a seat on the main deck or at the stern of the vessel. Our crew is always available to assist. Many guests who've never taken seasickness medication have a perfectly comfortable voyage, but it is best to be prepared.
What should I wear and bring?
San Francisco marine layer means it can be cooler on the water than on the shore, even on sunny days. We strongly recommend layering; a base layer, a warm mid-layer, and a windproof outer jacket. Our vessels have indoor and outdoor seating. Bring sunscreen even on cloudy days, UV reflects off water. Binocular will dramatically enhance your whale-watching experience. Don't forget your camera, you'll want proof of what you witness out there.
Is this cruise suitable for children and families?
Absolutely! A whale watch cruise is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences a child can have. Children 4 and under cruise free. Youth ages 5-17 receive discounted pricing. Our naturalist guides are skilled at engaging young guests and making wildlife biology accessible and thrilling for all ages. Baby strollers are welcome on the main deck.
Where do you depart from? Is there parking nearby?
All Whales of The Bay Cruises depart from Pier 43 1/2, in the heart of Fisherman's Wharf, the same pier that Red and White Fleet calls home. Enter "Red and White Fleet" into any GPS. We recommend arriving 2-30 minutes before departure. We do not offer parking validation. We recommend using an app such as SpotHero to find parking within the neighborhood, as there are many lots within easy walking distance. Public transit (Muni F-Line street car) stops directly at Fisherman's Wharf and two Cable Car lines offer transit directly to the Wharf.
