We had another beautiful day out on the water! Shortly after crossing the Golden Gate, we began seeing harbor porpoises swimming around us, along with a few sea lions feeding nearby. As we continued offshore, we reached an area a couple of miles from the coast, where Captain Mike spotted a few spouts in the distance. Before long, we began noticing spouts popping up all around us, with an estimated five whales in the area.
The whales seemed to be busy feeding deep below the surface, which made them somewhat tricky to find. However, we were eventually treated to an amazing encounter with a mother and calf pair of humpback whales! The calf stayed right alongside its mother as the two surfaced multiple times, coming within roughly 100 feet of the boat. Seeing a mother and calf pair is always a special treat, and we were fortunate to get such wonderful looks at them as they surfaced together.
On our way back toward the Golden Gate, we were once again surrounded by marine life. We saw tons of harbor porpoises throughout the bay and spotted many sea lions lounging on the buoys as we passed by. It was a lovely way to wrap up a day filled with exciting wildlife sightings and a particularly special encounter with these two humpbacks.
