Alcatraz Island Closed? There's Still a Bay Full of San Francisco to Explore

Had your heart set on visiting Alcatraz? A change of plans can be disappointing but your San Francisco adventure still has plenty of room for spectacular views.
Alcatraz Island is temporarily closed for dock repairs from October 26 through November 18, 2026, with the schedule subject to change as work progresses. While visits to the island are paused, a sightseeing cruise offers another memorable way to experience San Francisco from the water.
With San Francisco Cruises, home of the historic Red and White Fleet, you can trade a walk through the cellhouse for fresh Bay air, waterfront stories, and a whole new angle on the city.
Our cruises do not land on Alcatraz Island or include admission to the prison. They offer a different experience: iconic sights and time out on beautiful San Francisco Bay.
See Alcatraz from the Bay on the Golden Gate Bay Cruise
If Alcatraz was at the top of your sightseeing list, our 1-hour Golden Gate Bay Cruise is a great way to keep the island in the picture.
Cruise around Alcatraz and sail beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, taking in the waterfront along the way. Seeing the bridge rise overhead is a San Francisco moment that deserves a spot on your itinerary and your camera roll.
Audio narration is available in 16 languages on personal audio guides, with no download required. Hear the stories in your language while keeping your phone free for photos.
Make It Two Bridges on the Bridge to Bridge Cruise
Have a little more time? Our 90-minute San Francisco Bridge to Bridge Cruise takes you beneath both the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge.
Along the way, enjoy views of Alcatraz and San Francisco’s distinctive waterfront, with audio narration available in 16 languages. It’s a wonderful choice for visitors who want to fit more of the city into one outing.
Slow Down with the San Francisco City Lights Cruise
For a more relaxed outing, make an evening of it on our 2-hour San Francisco City Lights Cruise.
Settle into indoor or outdoor seating, enjoy pre-recorded music, and watch the skyline become the evening’s main attraction. Drinks are available for purchase from the onboard bar, and you’re welcome to bring your own food, an excellent excuse to pick up something delicious at Fisherman’s Wharf.
This cruise is not narrated, making it a good fit for guests who prefer to unwind and enjoy the view. Lighting and visibility vary with the season, departure time, and weather.
A San Francisco Original, Ready for Your Next Adventure
San Francisco Cruises has been sharing the Bay with visitors since 1892. As San Francisco’s original Bay sightseeing cruise company, still independently family-owned, we bring deep local roots and a warm welcome to every outing.
Our cruises depart from Pier 43½ at Fisherman’s Wharf, making it easy to pair your time on the water with a meal or a waterfront stroll. Bring warm layers, keep your camera handy, and leave a little room in your plans for the Bay.
Alcatraz may be taking a repair break. Your San Francisco memories don’t have to.
