The Red and White Fleet was an integral part of the transportation trends and resources available to those living in or visiting the Bay Area. Before our landmark Golden Gate and Bay bridges were built, ferries were a necessary contribution to the livelihood of this city-by-the-bay. In 1892, seventeen year old Thomas Crowley used $80 he had saved to purchase a used Whitehall boat, and in so doing entered the competitive boating business of the time.
